Life MembershipDuring the first 50 years of JPS, membership was extended to any female employee of Phillips or its majority-owned subsidiaries or companies closely affiliated with Phillips operating within the confines of the company. The first life membership was granted in 1937 to Lee Mossman, recognizing her 20 years of company service.
As JPS grew--and aged--bylaws were updated periodically to coincide with JPS and company service. When JPS reached its 20-year mark, bylaws for life membership required 20 years consecutive service with the company and 20 consecutive years as a JPS member. At JPS's 50th anniversary convention in 1987, the bylaw was again changed to require only 20 consecutive years with JPS to be eligible for life membership. At that time, 507 life memberships had been granted. To recognize outstanding service, a JPS member who cannot fulfill the 20-year requirement may be granted honorary life membership upon recommendation of their chapter and approval by National Board.
